The group

One faculty member and six doctoral students, all in the Department of Computer Science at Michigan Tech and most of us Michigan Tech alumni ourselves — plus the graduates who came before us. You will find the lab in Rekhi Hall 316.

Portrait of Soner Önder

Soner Önder

Professor, Computer Science · Affiliated Professor, Electrical and Computer Engineering

Prof. Önder leads SCIA. His research sits at the intersection of computer architecture, programming languages, and simulation: instruction-level parallelism, memory dependence prediction and disambiguation, misprediction recovery, single-assignment program representations that double as instruction sets, and the architecture description languages behind the FAST simulator generator. His work has been supported by the NSF since a 2004 CAREER award on future-value-based instruction-level parallelism, and he holds a U.S. patent on ordering instructions using future values.

He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Pittsburgh in 1999, and teaches CS 4431 Computer Architecture and CS 5431 Advanced Computer Architecture at Michigan Tech.

Portrait of Tino Moore

Tino Moore

Ph.D. Candidate

Works on making single-assignment program representations directly executable by hardware. Dissertation: Bounded Dynamic Single Assignment Form: Making Single Assignment Machine Executable. Interests include high-bandwidth fetch mechanisms, branch prediction, program representation, dataflow architecture, and single-thread performance. M.S. and B.S., Michigan Tech.

Portrait of Kieran Young

Kieran Young

Ph.D. Candidate

Optimizes memory instructions in superscalar processors for performance and efficiency, and maintains much of the group's shared simulation framework, including its superscalar core model and non-blocking cache hierarchy. Also contributes to instruction-space vectorization, in-memory computing, and branch prediction, with collaborators at NTNU and FSU. M.S. and B.S., Michigan Tech.

Portrait of Caleb Swain

Caleb Swain

Ph.D. Candidate

Develops speculative and non-speculative memory optimization techniques, with an emphasis on pre-execution of instructions and micro-ops: prefetching, address computation, bypassing and cloaking, L0 caches, and store–load interaction. B.S., Michigan Tech.

Portrait of Andrew Frey

Andrew Frey

Ph.D. Candidate

Studies microarchitecture and embedded systems. Joined the group in 2023 after completing a B.S. in Computer Science and Computer Engineering at Michigan Tech, and has been a teaching assistant for CS 4431 Computer Architecture and CS 3411 Systems Programming.

Portrait of Sarah Larkin

Sarah Larkin

Ph.D. Candidate

Researches dynamic instruction-stream modification, with additional interests in SIMD and vector machines and instruction set architecture design. Also active in computer science education and ethics, and has taught CS 3425 Introduction to Database Systems. M.S. and B.S., Michigan Tech.
